EarthLore, an NGO based in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, is looking for an Administrator for its office and the Earth Jurisprudence Programme. This varied role will suit a versatile person who loves organising and coordinating, is an excellent multi-tasker and has strong administrative and writing skills suited to supporting two small and busy teams and international partners. We need someone who is self-motivated, spirited, has strong experience in admin and team coordination, and is inspired by our work.
EarthLore works with rural communities in South Africa and Zimbabwe to accompany them on a journey to revive their traditional ecological knowledge and practices, seed diversity and farming and governance systems, essential for navigating climate change and defending their land against growing threats from mining and industrial exploitation.
The Gaia Foundation (Gaia) based in London, partners with EarthLore and hosts the Earth Jurisprudence Programme that gives pre-eminence to the lore and laws of Nature. Both Gaia and EarthLore are members of the African Earth Jurisprudence Collective, responsible for hosting a programme of Earth Jurisprudence trainings (online and in-situ) with pan-African participants and supporting graduates to accompany communities in reviving their traditional knowledge and practices, restoring sacred natural sites, re-establishing indigenous seed diversity and food sovereignty, and strengthening ecological governance systems derived from the laws of the Earth.
As the Office and Earth Jurisprudence Programme Administrator you will play a key role in ensuring the smooth-running of EarthLore’s office, its programmes and the Earth Jurisprudence Programme hosted by Gaia, in collaboration with the African Earth Jurisprudence Collective.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Administrative and Financial Support to the EarthLore Johannesburg office
- Perform various admin, HR and finance tasks including sourcing quotations, preparing payment documents, and reconciling project petty cash; maintain a cloud filing system; participate in board meetings as required.
- Administrative Support to Gaia and the Earth Jurisprudence Programme
- Provide general support to the Earth Jurisprudence Team at Gaia including organise training sessions and retreats including travel (national and international), accommodation, visas, and insurance; attend meetings, host video-calls and take minutes; provide support with IT needs and challenges; write reports; liaise with funders; and update website of the African Earth Jurisprudence Collective.
Qualifications and Experience:
Academic Requirements: Minimum bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline.
Language skill: Fluent in English (writing and speaking) and an advantage if able to speak French.
Experience: At least 3 years proven experience as an Administrator, Administrative Assistant including project management, or similar role with excellent organisational and time-management skills; and a manifest interest in indigenous knowledge and Nature. An ability to work well with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds is important. Mode of Application:
